Zero Subsidy Project

The Karachi BRT Red Line is Pakistan’s first zero subsidy transport project. The design is sustainable with the Bio-Gas component – cow dung from Cattle Colony will be utilized as fuel for the buses under the project.

Zero Land Acquisition

There is zero land acquisition in this project. The existing Right of Way will be used.

Passenger Ridership

The Red Line BRT will facilitate over 300,000 people on a daily basis.

Bio-Gas Plan Establishment for Local Environment Friendly Fuel

A Biogas plant is being established at Landi, which will provide environment friendly fuel locally produced; thus, saving millions of rupees paid for petroleum products.

3rd Generation Gold Standard BRT

This is the city’s first third generation BRT providing platform level boarding and clean vehicle technology.

Façade to Façade Corridor Development

First time in Karachi development works will be carried out from one building line to the opposite building line improving main carriage ways, side roads and parking spaces.

250 Bio Hybrid Buses (9-, 12- & 18-Meter Buses)

Redline buses are state of the art Euro-V buses which are safe, comfortable and efficient.

Compensation for Affected People and Dispersed Business

We recognize our responsibility towards the businesses affected by the project during the construction phase. All affected and dispersed people will be compensated and shall be allotted alternate spaces for their business, they will also be provided vocation training to help them improve their quality of life.

Landscaping along the Corridor

Over 50,000 fruit bearing trees will be planted across the corridor as part of the project.

When completed, the Karachi BRT Red Line will directly benefit 1.5 million people in Karachi with an expected daily ridership of 350,000 per day.

The Karachi Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line Project is intended to deliver a zero-emission sustainable transportation system that is affordable, comfortable, fast, safe, and secure. The project will comprise two interlinked outputs, the construction of a 26.5-kilometer (km) BRT corridor and associated facilities, and sustainable BRT operations through institutional improvements. The project is economically justified by major time savings for future BRT passengers, vehicle operating cost savings, better air quality and carbon emissions savings, which will improve the health of Karachi’s citizens and also mitigate climate change.

BRT Red Line being a game changer for the city will offer full integration of the proximate land use with Transit Oriented development. The design features of the Red Line Infrastructure are at par with international standards wherein focus is both on accessibility, mobility and last mile connectivity. Likewise, universal accessibility and gender needs have been addressed in the design, ensuring participation of all social groups of the society.

The project is sponsored by the Government of Sindh, with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and co-financiers, including the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the French Agency for Development (AFD), and the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
